Aneesh Chopra, the current Virginia Secretary of Technology, has been named America’s first Chief Technology Officer. Chopra will work alongside his former colleague Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra in making technology work in the public sector as well as driving private sector innovation.

The first thing that struck me about the Chopra pick is his wealth of health care experience. Chopra’s background in both health care and information technology says a lot about just how committed the administration is to using technology to renovate the American health care system. Perhaps even more importantly, it demonstrates that they have a clear idea of how they want these changes to be implemented.

Radar has a great rundown on just who Chopra is,  what he’s done to this point and why he’s a great choice for the position. You can also get a look at the man himself  speaking at the 2005 State of the Net conference over at Ruminating Out Loud.
